The Red Feather Flap

Red Feather Lakes Colorado

All,

I hope to build a vacation place on my property in the area in the next couple of years.

I need some good local advice and thoughts.

What I am currently leaning towards is a 24 foot yurt. Basically I just need something with a simple kitchen and a bathroom (composting toilet and a decent shower). Maybe have a small sleeping area walled off from the remainder of the dwelling.

I need to find a builder that might be good at something like this. I need advice on power (would like to be off the grid), I was thinking propane to power kitchen and hot water heater, etc. Not sure I would really need electricity. I am not opposed to spending evenings by candlelight or lantern playing cards, etc.

Appreciate your thoughts, advice, recommendations, etc.

Happy T-Day tomorrow!

Hi Matthew-

Cool!

I bet others will recommend builders they like. I just thought I'd mention the Solargon, a structure reputed to have superb insulating properties. I've seen a model Solargon, and was impressed by the apparent ease of construction. The SIPS they use just lock together with a hex key; if you had a bunch in your driveway, you could have your walls up in an afternoon, I think.

Anyway, there are lots of these cool modular structures coming to market lately (I love the look of these Tumbleweed Tiny Houses...). It'd be fun to find the perfect spot on your land and set one up. Good luck!

Justin,

The Solargon is pretty cool, definitely a consideration.

I have browsed the Tumbleweed Tiny House before, they are really cool. But maybe just a bit too tiny!

Thanks.

Hi Matthew,

Check out Petrie Construction (petrieconst@aol.com) Jim Petrie has designed and built several homes in Crystal Lakes and Glacier View (including his own in Glacier View) in the past several years. As one of his clients I can tell you his work is not only impeccable, but extremely well priced. He's also a real problem solver.
