The Red Feather Flap

Red Feather Lakes Colorado

I am wondering if any of the residents of Red Feathers has had to pay the $1.00 fee that is being requested at both Westlake and Dowdylake for walking or biking around the lakes? There is a sign posted across from the Red Feathers Supermarket on Dowdy Lake Road. Does anyone have any information on this? Also, does anyone know the reason behind the gate that closes (during the winter) off the road that goes to end of the Dowdy Lake campground?

Welcome, Linda. Thanks for your good questions. Both Dowdy and West are under the jurisdiction of the Canyon Lakes District of the U.S. Forest Service. Since it's now Saturday, the district supervisor isn't available, but I have forwarded your questions for her response early next week. Whatever the fee regulation is, it likely applies as well to other USFS lakes in the Canyon Lakes district.

Thanks Crawfish. If I don't hear anything from her, I will try to contact the division myself.

Linda: Here's the response which reached my inbox while I was away:

This email is in response to the 9/11/09 post on the Red Feather Lakes social network site by Linda Romero. I would appreciate if you would forward this response to Ms. Romero.

In order to meet the increasing needs of visitors and to deliver quality recreation opportunities, the US Forest Service has the authority to charge modest fees at campgrounds, rental cabins, high-impact recreation areas and at day-use sites that have certain facilities. Dowdy Lake, West Lake, Chambers Lake, and Bellaire Lake are the four lakes where we currently charge a day use fee for use of the facilities and the site. The fees collected are used for operations and maintenance of the site.

With regard to the gate at the Dowdy Lake Campground, we close part of the campground during the winter months due to the decreased demand and to reduce maintenance costs.

Please let me know if I can answer any additional questions.

Linda and others,

If you are over 62, or know someone who is, pay $10 for a Senior Pass at the USFS office in Fort Collins. This will give you and other occupants of your (non-commercial) vehicle free entrance to Dowdy and West Lakes, and other Federal recreation sites. Just put the card or its number on your dashboard or hang from your mirror. No need to renew annually. The one-time-only fee lasts as long as you do.
